We tend to hear about people, myself often included, making New Year's resolutions framed in changed behaviors: I will workout MORE; I will eat MORE healthy foods; I will drink LESS; I will work LESS, and so on. This year I am taking a different approach - focusing on strategies that are rooted in research about how our minds and bodies are deeply connected, particularly as we navigate inevitable stress.

The U.S. pitchers are seasoned veterans, and they have been dominant thus far. Cat Osterman, 38, is back for her third Olympics after winning gold with the team in 2004 and silver in 2008. She began her Olympic career as a 20-year-old phenom and came out of retirement a couple of years ago in the quest for another gold. Monica Abbott, 35, is also back on the mound for Team USA, after winning silver with the team at the 2008 Games.

The key for a coach is to figure out how to build trust with each athlete in authentic ways that motivate them to maximize their performances, build strong team chemistry, and help individuals and teams move beyond setbacks, like with Kerri Strug’s first failed vault attempt. Coaches must keep in mind, however, that each athlete brings their own set of unique identity markers, experiences, communication preferences, and levels of self-awareness to the table. Athletes respond to success and failure differently and have varying preferences for how they build trust and communicate.
